BRITISH NEURO-ONCOLOGY SOCIETY ANNUAL MEETING 2023

BNOS Liverpool 2022: Current, innovative, and alternative. Raising the standard.

BNOS Liverpool 2022 is the first BNOS meeting in two years to return to being in person. The aim of the meeting is to define current standards, examine alternative treatments available, and to look to new and exciting future developments. This is a practical conference for the working clinician and scientist, providing information to help improve treatment and direct investigations for the future. Three educational sessions (Standard setting, Improving video consultations, and Preclinical models) on the Wednesday morning kick off a varied and interesting programme set over three days. Invited speakers, submitted presentations, and poster presentations will cover topic sessions including ‘Beyond NICE’ alternative treatments, Immunotherapy now and the future, Neuro-oncology and social media, The implications of the new WHO classification, as well as sessions on gliomas, metastases, meningiomas, and surgical techniques.

Prof Roger Stupp will open the conference with a talk on innovative clinical trials and the future. Prof Stupp is in a unique position as the lead investigator on the RCT of temozolamide, which changed how we treat patients with Glioblastoma, and the RCT of tumour treating fields, which has not yet achieved such wide acceptance. On Thursday, David Bolton will present ‘Mental resilience and coping with change’. David is someone with an exceptional story, who has a message that is relevant to us all in these difficult times.

Amongst the many distinguished speakers at BNOS in Liverpool this year, we are privileged to have John Barnes speaking. John, a former professional footballer and manager, will talk about ethnicity and diversity after the society dinner, and has agreed to take questions afterwards. This is sure to be part of a thought provoking and entertaining evening.

Being in person allows a social programme. Wednesday evening features a ‘Shiverpool’ tour to learn of some of the haunted medical history of Liverpool, followed by a drinks reception on the 13th floor of the newly built Royal College of Physicians Spine building. Thursday morning is the first ever BNOS fun run (either 5 or 10Km by the docks), with the theme of raising awareness for brain tumour patients, and participants are encouraged to wear a wig or decorate their hair/head. Thursday evening is the conference dinner, with a ceilidh, at Isla Gladstone, a beautiful Victorian glass house set in its own private grounds. Finally, for the more adventurous, Friday morning includes an optional trip to the Liverpool Aqua park in the Albert docks, an adventure park including slides, jump off points, trampolines, all on the water, and guaranteed to get to get you awake for the scientific sessions that follow.

Please join us for what promises to be an interesting, varied, and entertaining meeting in Liverpool, 22nd-24th June 2022.
