Prevention and management of neurosurgical complications

Neurosurgical trainees are often faced with difficult cases and scenarios which are often complex and challenging. This course aims to provide expertise and additional skills on how to deal with these complex issues.

The course will be delivered via informal lectures and action learning sets covering the different facets of neurosurgical complications and skills to enable a trainee to manage any situation.

Attendees will be provided with an opportunity to discuss their personal experience of complications with an expert faculty group as well as simulation scenarios.

This course is aimed at ST1-ST8 neurosurgical trainees with a focus on probity and ethics (medical error) of the neurosurgical curriculum.

Content will include:

  • Invited keynote speaker: Henry Marsh – Stories of life, death and brain surgery
  • Getting It Right First Time (GIRFT)
  • Human Factors
  • The patient’s perspective
  • Legal Implications
  • Cranial and spinal complications
