Short biography

Dr Ute Pohl is a Consultant Neuropathologist with a special interest in molecular neurooncology.

After her PhD on the DCC gene, she moved into neurooncology at Michael Weller’s laboratory in Tuebingen, followed by work with David Louis in Boston/US on 1p19q loss and gene expression arrays.  After formal RCPath training in Cambridge, UK from 2000-2005, she worked as neuropathologist at Queen’s Hospital, London.

At QEHB since 2017, she is involved in the Tessa Jowell Brain Matrix Study led by Prof. Colin Watts and develops pathways for advanced genetics for glioma at QEHB/UHB.  She is committee member of BNS and BNOS.

Research and Clinical Interests

Molecular Neuropathology – Refined integrated diagnosis with state-of-the-art technology including methylation array, next generation sequencing and targeted sequencing.

Molecular Neurooncology / Neuropathology interface – better translation of histological and genetic findings into treatments, eg, actionable mutations – and better prediction of prognosis via prognostic genetic and histological markers.

Neurooncoimmunology – Tumour vaccination strategies, interaction between brain cancer stem cells, glioma cells and microglia.

Committees

British Neuropathological Society (since 2004)
Tessa Jowell Brain Matrix Study (since 2018)
British Neuro-oncology Society (since 2020)
