History

The British Neuro Oncology Society is the renaissance of the British Neuro Oncology Group (BNOG). The latter was conceived in 1980 as an forum for basic scientists and clinicians who wished to form an organisation to promote a dialogue on the management and biology of primary brain tumours.

BNOG and since 2004 BNOS has met annually every summer. Meetings are kept as informal as possible to catalyse dialogue amongst its membership.

0rganization Purpose

The purpose of this organisation is to promote excellence in basic science research and clinical management of CNS malignant tumours.

BNOS is composed of UK leaders in basic science research on CNS tumours in adults and children.

BNOS draws its clinical membership from consultant neurologists, neurosurgeons and oncologists with a special interest in malignant CNS tumours.

BNOS is proud of its recent close association with ANON (Association Neuro Oncology Nurses).

BNOS actively collaborates with the UK brain tumour charities and with the IBTA (International Brain Tumour Alliance).

BNOS participates as a stakeholder in advising NICE on drawing up neurooncology and spinal cord compression guidelines.

BNOS is actively involved in the UK political process with questions being asked in the House of Commons on improving UK care of patients with brain tumours.

Constitution

BNOS has a core council directly elected from its membership. Council membership is representative of all branches of neuro oncology with members representing basic science, neuropathology, neurology and oncology. Council formally meets 3 monthly.

Any person actively involved in neurooncology may apply for membership to BNOS.
